Things to look for leading up to Wrestlemania
Originally, this was supposed to be a “biggest stars of 2024/2025” outlook piece, but unfortunately, the whole story got deleted somehow. That being said, even though WWE isn’t technically a “sport” (since I define a sport as something with an unknown outcome), I still find it incredibly entertaining when it’s firing on all cylinders. Stories like Bray Wyatt and The Fiend, Dominik Mysterio, Liv Morgan, Rhea Ripley, The Shield’s ongoing saga (arguably still in play), and the Bloodline are examples of storylines with twists and turns that not many people can predict—and that’s what makes them special. Most of these are current stories, but even past rivalries that helped build WWE still hold up. Looking back on old feuds, it’s hard not to get invested in some of the stories they’re running, especially when their storytelling is firing on all cylinders.
That said, with the Royal Rumble behind us and WrestleMania just around the corner, it’s the perfect time to take a look at WWE and explore the potential directions the company could take in the coming months.
John Cena
It’s already been confirmed that this is John Cena’s final run in WWE, which, at this point, isn’t a surprise. He’s gradually been fading off TV and pay-per-views over the past few years, with his returns still managing to be some of the top moments of the year for many longtime WWE fans. As for his final run, I expect Cena to get whatever—and whoever—he wants, including another WrestleMania moment if he chooses to have one, which I think he will. The main point of this final run, however, seems to be to give Cena a true heel turn. His turn on Cody at the Elimination Chamber was one of the most shocking moments in recent WWE history, as we were possibly headed into WrestleMania with a babyface vs. babyface matchup for a title—where fans couldn’t lose. I think we’ll see everything Cena has left in these next few months. It’s clear he can still be a focal point of a show, a major draw for the crowd, and he’ll always be a golden goose for WWE.
Jey Uso
As the winner of the 2025 Royal Rumble, I expect Jey Uso to win his WrestleMania match as well. I’ll be honest, though—while I think he’s incredibly talented, I also feel that he’s one of the most overrated wrestlers in the industry right now. That said, the Raw after the Royal Rumble showed just how invested fans are in his story. I still remember when the Usos were just a tag team with their old theme, and it’s amazing to see how far they’ve come. They’ve earned every bit of their success. Jey Uso is phenomenal on the microphone (which teases a fun match idea), and his in-ring ability has only improved over time. His work in the Bloodline storyline has been nothing short of spectacular, and the entire story has been incredible. Everyone involved has become the best version of themselves. I believe Jey will win his match at WrestleMania and go on to have a very successful title reign.
Charlotte Flair
This one probably won’t surprise anyone who follows wrestling closely. I believe that Charlotte Flair will win at WrestleMania, and I believe this will also foreshadow the match between Cody Rhodes and John Cena. My idea would be that both Flair and Cena will win and hold titles on the same show. It feels poetic to have this be part of Cena’s final run in WWE: he surpasses Ric Flair's title count, but Charlotte will still be the “queen” of wrestling, starting her reign while Cena’s final chapter ultimately unfolds. The two names are synonymous with wrestling at this point, and both of them holding titles—no matter what stage of their careers they’re in (every joke with the Authority storyline here)—will always be “Best for business.”
